Launching Serverless Onboarding

Our onboarding solution integrates multiple capabilities orchestrated by a serverless workflow engine, simplifying the way banks, fintechs, and other financial institutions build their digital banking experiences. The diagram below illustrates the customer onboarding process, from the initial engagement with banking apps or AI chatbots to seamless integration with our SDKs. Customers can easily set up their profiles, while our system efficiently handles complexities such as Identity Verification and AML & KYC compliance in the background.

Exploring the Serverless Workflow Engine

Our Serverless Workflow Engine draws inspiration from the practical, developer-focused approach of the CloudEvents specification by CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation). It is designed for banks aiming to create seamless and efficient onboarding experiences leveraging cloud computing. Developers can craft custom onboarding flows that are robust, scalable, and aligned with modern event-driven architectures.


The key building blocks include Functions (individual operations like “Create User Profile”), Events (actions that trigger functions, such as “User Identity Verified”), and States (various steps of Workflow). Out of the box, our customers receive a production-ready workflow template, fully customizable to suit specific needs, with the ability to introduce new Events from internal systems and external ecosystem partners, and build proprietary logic using Functions.

Bringing The Power of the Ecosystem

Plumery’s headless approach allows customers to build their own web and mobile apps. To simplify this task, we provide a reference implementation powered by our SDK. With our web SDK powered by React, integrating third-party web components is straightforward.

Our strategic partnership with Sumsub, a full-cycle verification platform, exemplifies the power of the ecosystem. This collaboration enables highly configurable onboarding flows, combining Plumery’s serverless onboarding with Sumsub’s compliant KYC processes, drastically reducing the time required to create digital onboarding journeys. Integrating the Sumsub Web SDK with React components ensures a seamless front-end experience and secure verification process.

On the backend, we use webhooks to receive Sumsub notifications about the verification process. This serverless Function captures and processes the verification status, ensuring a smooth transition through the onboarding stages.

In this example, the Function checks if the review is completed and successful (indicated by “GREEN”). If so, it emits an Event, as specified in our onboarding template, which then triggers the transition from “kyc.user-identity-verified” to the next step in the onboarding process.
